  Tomorrow, August 9, will mark the 111th birthday of the late Tove Jansson (1914–2001), the famed Finnish creator of the Moomins and the author of a number of books for children and adults, several of which are published in English by NYRB. Though Jansson died in 2001, her reputation has only grown in the time since. A biographical film about her life, Tove, was released in 2020, and a new film adaptation of her beloved novel The Summer Book starring Glenn Close is set to arrive in US theaters this September. As Ursula K. Le Guin wrote of Jansson’s work, “It is prose of the very highest order; it is pure prose.
