De formación principalmente autodidacta, dominaba el griego, el español, el inglés y el francés, gracias a lo cual se convirtió en un descubridor temprano de la obra de Yeats, Proust o Rilke en la península italiana. Vivió la mayor parte de su vida dedicado a la lectura y la escritura en la Villa Piccolo, la residencia familiar, y no vio su obra publicada hasta la cincuentena por mediación de Eugenio Montale, gran admirador de su poesía junto a Giorgio Bassani, W.
